About Taj Mahal

Agra is defined by the majestic Taj Mahal – a promise of eternal love that Tagore described as ‘a teardrop on the cheek of time.’ This is a symbol of true love that Emperor Shah Jahan had for his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Crafted in white marble, this mausoleum is one of the seven wonders of the world and for all the right reasons! As you walk through the beautifully developed, lush gardens, you reach this grand structure that reinstates your faith in the power of love. Apparently, a total 20,000 artisans worked relentlessly for about 20 years to build what they might not have thought but came to be known as one of the most spectacular buildings of all time. Taj is at its most radiant at early mornings when it takes on a pinkish hue, milky white at evenings and glowing yellow at midnight on a full moon night. It will take a lot more than words to understand why it’s imperative for everyone to visit this at least once in their life.

About Jama Mosque

Jama Mosque, literally meaning Friday Mosque is a simple, red sandstone mosque and has little use of white marble. The mosque is a perfect example of Islamic art blended with Persian element. Daughter of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan built the Masjid at the cost of five lakh rupees. This rectangular structure comprises of a central core with a single dome, two columned halls on both the side and two square chambers crowned with domes. There is a carved semicircular niche in the wall that indicates the qibla which adorns the central chamber and the two smaller rooms. The interiors are decorated with watercolor paintings of florals and an inlaid mosaic of stones that are bordered by glazed tiles and golden inscriptions on a royal blue background. The mosque complex also houses the Buland Darwaza and the Tomb of Salim Chishti. The mosque can accommodate 10,000 people at a time and is a prominent place in Agra.

About Sikandara- Akbar’s Tomb

The Sikandara- Akbar’s Tomb is a mausoleum of the third Mughal Emporer, Akbar that was commissioned and constructed by Akbar during his lifetime and was later completed by son Jahangir. 8 kilometers away from the main Agra city, the tomb is an important heritage site and is located exactly 1 km from wife Mariam’s Tomb. The tomb was constructed using red sandstone with the upper portion completed in marble. Four gateways that lead to the tomb reflect a unique hybrid of different styles of architecture – Hindu, Muslim, Christian and a patent mixture of Akbar’s typical style. The main tomb has a different square design. The geometrical designs were achieved by the mosaics of glazed tiles or colored stones. Later, Emperor Jahangir inlaid semi-precious stones into a hollowed depression in the white marble slab. Also, Akbar’s daughters Shakrul Nisha Begum and Aram Bano are also buried on the same floor. The place is most visited in winters along with the tomb of Akbar’s wife and Jahangir’s mother, Mariam.

About Fatehpur Sikri

Another UNESCO World Heritage sites in Agra and located 39 km from the main city; Fatehpur Sikri is a city built entirely of red sandstone by Emperor Akbar. The city was abandoned by the Mughals in 1585 after it had served the ruling capital for almost ten years. Although water shortage is attributed as the probable cause of this abandonment, the real reason remains a mystery. The colossal city has some grand structures, the most prominent one being the imperial compound that is made up of royal palaces, harems, mosque, private quarters and other administration buildings. But what attracts a throng of visitors throughout the year to this city is one of the largest mosques in India, the Jama Masjid. Well-preserved till date, it is believed that if a person prays with immense sincerity, their wishes are granted. The more important buildings for visitors here include Buland Darwaza, Jama Masjid, the tomb of Salim Chishti, Diwan-e-Aam and Diwan-e-Khas, Ibadat Khana, Anup Talao, Mariam-uz-Zamani’s Palace, Naubat Khana, etc.

About Tomb Of Itimad-Ud-Daulah

Often called as a ‘jewel box’ and the ‘Baby Taj,’ the tomb of I’timād-ud-Daulah is often regarded as a draft of the Taj Mahal. It is believed to be the first Mughal tomb made of marble with pietra dura artwork. Itmad-Ud-Daulah means ‘Pillar of the Government,’ is an exquisite tomb of Mizra Ghiyas Beg, chief minister of Emperor Jahangir and Mumtaz Mahal’s grandfather. The tomb was built by Noor Jahan for her father similar to the tomb of Jahangir in Lahore. The monument is delicate in appearance due to its particularly finely carved jali (lattice marble screens). Situated on the banks of Yamuna, the mausoleum is set in a vast cruciform garden crisscrossed by water walkways. Spread in about fifty meters square, the tomb, is built on a base twenty-six-meter square and about one meter high. On each corner of the building, there are thirteen-meter tall hexagonal towers. The main chamber of the tomb is adorned with mosaics and semi-precious stones that are inlaid in white marble and contains the tomb of Itimad-Ud-Dulah and his wife.
